Mr. Weiner - Special Education, Consortium and Early College Counselor
Hello! My name is Howard Weiner and I am the School Counselor for Special Education, Early College and Consortium students here at East Detroit High School. I am also the counselor that handles Dual Enrollment for the school. I have been a counselor here since 2002.
I went and graduated from West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield, Michigan. From there, I went to Michigan State University where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. I then went to Oakland University where I earned a Masters of Arts in Counseling. About 15 years ago I went back to Oakland University and completed a post-Masters program so I could earn my teacher certification that got me certified as a School Counselor as well as for Math and Social Studies. I always had a desire to help people, but I did not want to go to medical school. When I saw that I was not doing as well as I would like in studying to be an optometrist while at MSU, I found a strong interest in psychology and that it was a field that fit a lot of the qualities I could see myself doing as a professional. While in graduate school, I volunteered on a crisis line that solidified my desire to be a counselor and to help people. That experience validated I could do this kind of work and do it well. During my clinical counseling internship, my clinical supervisor gave me child and adult clients, but I found I could work real well with kids and teens. I have worked with children and adolescents my whole career. My first professional job was working as a Child and Family Therapist at a community mental health center in Lapeer County. I did outpatient individual, family and group therapy, presentations on parenting and child issues, and worked on their crisis line. After about 5 years, I then took a job as a Clinical Mental Health Assessor at Common Ground Sanctuary. I was hired a as a child and adolescent assessment specialist. I did assessments for hospitalization for children and adults at a 24 hour county contracted assessment center. I worked there for a little over three years. I went back to school to get certified as a teacher or school counselor, and was then hired to work as a School Counselor at East Detroit High School. I have been here ever since! I am married and have two daughters. My wife works as an Occupational Therapist and works for a contact company that runs nursing homes. One of my daughters is an 8th grader and is a competitive gymnast. My other daughter is a 6th grader and is a competitive dancer. Their practices times, competitions and recitals keep me plenty busy at home. I also enjoy reading, walking, riding my bike, traveling (when able) and spending time with my family. I am also a huge Peanuts Gang (especially Snoopy) and Star Wars fan!!
